Does Going to the Chiropractor Hurt?

Quick Answers (60-Second Summary)

Q: Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
Most people feel relief, not pain. Some feel mild pressure or light soreness—similar to starting a new exercise.

Q: Will my first visit hurt?
Rarely does the first visit hurt. That being said, the intent of the initial exam is to decipher the source of the pain, which can cause some mild discomfort. The exam is gentle, guided, and tailored to your comfort. You control the pace.

Q: What if I’m nervous about the “cracking” sound?
The sound isn’t bones; it’s just gas releasing from the joint—similar to opening a fizzy drink. Many techniques also don’t make any sound at all; so if the cracking sound scares you, just tell your Chiropractor – and they should be able to use a technique that is not going to make that sound.

Q: Are there no-crack options?
Yes. At Fairway Chiropractic Centre, we offer hands-on adjustments, instrument-based adjusting, mobilizations, and other gentle options depending on your comfort and goals.

Q: Should I expect soreness afterward?
Sometimes—typically mild and temporary, like after a good stretch or workout.  We tend to find that the level of soreness after a Chiropractic adjustment is related to how well you are able to let yourself relax during the visit.  This is where skilled hands make a huge difference – having a Chiropractor be patient and wait for that magic moment where you are relaxed for a split second before adjusting you is key to a comfortable adjustment.  Rather than rushing an adjustment and forcing movement despite your guarding and resisting – this will likely be more painful.

A Patient-Centered Guide to What You Can Expect

Let’s Clear This Up: Chiropractic Care Should Not Be Painful

One of the most common questions new patients ask—especially those dealing with disc pain, sciatica, or long-standing stiffness—is:

“Is this going to hurt?”

The honest answer:
Chiropractic care is designed to reduce pain, not create it.
When done properly, using evidence-based guidelines (ACP, NICE), a chiropractic adjustment (also known as spinal manipulation) is typically comfortable, controlled, and joint-specific, not forceful or aggressive.

At Fairway Chiropractic Centre, everything we do follows one principle:
Your comfort determines the technique—not the other way around.

Why Most People Don’t Find Chiropractic Care Painful

1. Adjustments Are Extremely Precise

A proper adjustment targets a joint that isn’t moving well. When motion improves, pressure eases off:

  • irritated joints
  • tight muscles
  • inflamed nerves

Most patients feel relief, lightness, or warmth—not pain.

2. The “sound” isn’t pain-related

That popping noise (when it happens) is simply gas shifting in the joint.
No bones are grinding.
No structures are being damaged.
And many techniques don’t produce any sound at all.

3. Your body releases natural pain-relieving chemicals

Research shows spinal adjustments can stimulate:

  • endorphins
  • pain-modulating pathways
  • improved joint mechanics

This is one reason many patients stand up from the table feeling “looser” or “lighter” immediately.

Are There Times When an Adjustment Might Feel Uncomfortable?

Yes—but only mildly, and often for good reason.

1. When the area is already very irritated

If you’re coming in with:

  • a fresh disc injury
  • inflamed joints
  • protective muscle spasm
  • acute sciatica

Even gentle movement may feel tender because the area is already sensitive—not because the adjustment is harmful.

2. When you’re trying a new movement

Just like returning to the gym after time off, the first few visits can cause:

  • light soreness
  • stretch-like sensations
  • fatigue

This typically lasts 12–24 hours and decreases quickly as your spine adapts.

3. When a different technique is needed

This is why technique choice matters.
A big part of my practice philosophy is:
We always choose the least aggressive, most effective method for your body.
If something doesn’t feel right, we simply change the approach.

What We Do at Fairway Chiropractic Centre to Ensure It Doesn’t Hurt

What We Do at Fairway Chiropractic Centre to Ensure It Doesn’t Hurt

1. A gentle, thorough assessment

Before anything happens, we go through a guided evaluation—completely at your pace. No rush. No assumptions.
This helps us understand:

  • your pain triggers
  • comfortable ranges of motion
  • areas to avoid
  • preferred techniques

2. Multiple technique options

Patients can choose from:

  • Hands-on chiropractic adjustments – varying in force strength from very gentle to very firm depending on past preference for best results – if no past experience, then we will discuss what we both agree is a good starting point.
  • Instrument-assisted adjustments (activator-style—very gentle)
  • Joint mobilizations (no cracking)

We tailor everything to your comfort, mobility, and goals.

3. Ongoing communication

You always know what we’re doing before we do it.  Especially if it’s your first adjustment ever – we walk and talk you through it step by step, ensuring that you feel comfortable at all times.  I’ve seen 100’s of people who are so scared to see a Chiropractor, and only coming in because their friend, or family member said they just had to do it, because nothing else has helped them so far.  We care for you just as a family member – with gentle care.

It is critical that you tell your Chiropractor at your next visit how you felt after your last adjustment.  This will help them tailor the care for you specifically.  Everybody responds slightly differently.  Some do better when the adjustments are firm, while others do best when they are quite gentle.  Communicating your response to the previous adjustment (for better or worse) is critical in order to ensure the best care is provided to you for best results – Please don’t be afraid to speak up; it’s taken as positive criticism to help you best.

You always have full control.

4. A patient-centred, evidence-based approach

You’ll never get a one-size-fits-all plan.
Your care plan is built around your:

  • goals
  • schedule
  • healing pace
  • treatment preferences

And we re-evaluate as we go.

If You Prefer ‘No Crack’—That’s Totally Fine

Some of our patients prefer:

  • Tool-assisted adjustments (like the ‘clicker’, Activator tool)
  • Mobilization techniques

These are excellent options and work very well, especially for:

  • seniors
  • people nervous about manual adjustments
  • patients with osteoporosis
  • post-surgical patients
  • Patients going through a flare up.

You should never feel pressured into a technique that doesn’t feel right for you.

What About Disc Herniations or Sciatica—Does That Hurt More?

Great question.

During a disc flare-up, everything can feel sensitive.
That’s why in these cases, we often start with:

  • Pain-free positions to adjust you in.
  • Gentle mobilizations

As pain calms down, we gradually add the type of care your body tolerates best.

This approach has helped thousands of patients avoid surgery, reduce nerve pain, and get back to their lives—without increasing pain in the process.
