Is Chiropractic Safe for Kids?

Quick Answers

Is chiropractic safe for children?
Yes — when delivered by a trained, registered chiropractor using age-appropriate, gentle techniques.

Are there risks?
Serious adverse events are extremely rare. Mild soreness or irritability can occur, especially after the first visit.

Is there strong research for certain conditions?
For musculoskeletal issues like stiffness, movement limitation, or posture concerns: Yes. For non-musculoskeletal issues (colic, reflux, ear infections, asthma): The research is limited, mixed, or inconclusive.

Should infants receive high-velocity adjustments?
No. Evidence-based guidelines recommend modified, gentle techniques for infants and young children.

How do I know my child will be safe?
Choose a chiropractor trained in paediatric care, who uses modified techniques, explains everything clearly, obtains informed consent, and prioritizes the child and parent being informed and comfortable every step of the way.

What the Research Actually Says About Paediatric Chiropractic Care

Parents want to do the right thing — and the right information matters.

To understand the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic for children, two major sources offer important insights:

  1. Clinical experience reports from paediatric chiropractic clinics, including decades of safe practice and zero reports of serious injuries.
(Summarized in: Safer Care Victoria – inquiry on safety of Chiropractic care in children below the age of 12 — showing 12–15 million child visits over 20 years with no recorded serious adverse events.)
  2. The Safer Care Victoria, an Australian independent review (commissioned, 2019 by the government of the state of Victoria), which examined spinal manipulation in children under 12.
    The key findings:

    • Very low rates of reported harm when care is age-appropriate.
    • Evidence for benefit in musculoskeletal conditions.
    • Limited or weak evidence for non-musculoskeletal conditions such as asthma, recurrent ear infections, colic, and enuresis.

What this means: Paediatric chiropractic can be safe and effective — when performed responsibly, gently, and for the right reasons.

My Background in Paediatric Chiropractic: Why Families Trust Us at Fairway Chiropractic Centre

Many chiropractors treat children. Very few chiropractors have published peer-reviewed research on paediatric chiropractic care.

As part of my commitment to safety, professionalism, and excellence in children’s spinal health, I (Dr. Nikola “Nik” Dukovac) have authored several paediatric case-series in the Asia-Pacific Chiropractic Journal:

1. Infant Colic & Reflux Case Series

Resolution of Infant Reflux Concomitant with Chiropractic Care (5 Cases)

Demonstrates the use of gentle, modified techniques for infants with reflux-like symptoms, and discusses safety considerations.

2. Infant Range of Motion Case Series

Paediatric Chiropractic Care and Improved Range of Motion

Covers infants with limited cervical movement following challenging births such as vacuum or forceps delivery.

3. Breastfeeding Difficulty Case Series

Resolution of Breastfeeding Issues with Tethered Oral Tissues Concomitant with Chiropractic Care (7 Cases)

Demonstrates collaborative, gentle care used alongside lactation professionals.

These publications reflect three key things:

  1. I am trained and deeply experienced in paediatric biomechanics.
  2. I prioritize gentle, age-specific techniques, not adult-style adjustments on infants.
  3. I practise according to evidence, safety guidelines, and collaborative care — not ideology.

This is why local parents, midwives, lactation consultants, and family doctors refer to our clinic.  It’s hard to believe but I’ve even had a pediatrician in Kitchener refer an infant for Chiropractic care to me.

How We Keep Chiropractic Care Safe for Children

How We Keep Chiropractic Care Safe for Children

1. A Detailed, Gentle Examination

We never rush.
We assess:

  • movement, posture, and reflexes
  • muscle tension
  • ranges of motion
  • developmental milestones
  • signs that require referral (red flags)

2. Modified, Age-Appropriate Techniques

Children are not adjusted the same way adults are.

For infants:

  • gentle mobilizations
  • soft-tissue release
  • sustained pressure
  • comfort-based positioning

For older children/adolescents:

  • lower-force adjustments
  • mobilizations
  • postural coaching
  • exercises (especially helpful during growth spurts)

High-velocity thrusts are used cautiously and only when appropriate for age and condition — and never on infants.

3. Clear Communication & Consent

We explain every step to you and your child (age-appropriate), and we get clear consent.

4. Honest Expectations

For musculoskeletal issues such as:

  • stiff neck
  • sports injuries
  • postural fatigue
  • limited range of motion
    chiropractic can be very helpful.

For non-musculoskeletal problems (colic, reflux, ear infections), we explain openly that evidence is limited, and any care plan involves:

  • gentle techniques
  • close monitoring
  • co-management with your child’s healthcare team

5. Safety & Referral First

If something requires a paediatrician, urgent care, physiotherapy, speech-language pathology, or lactation support — we refer quickly.
Safety always comes before treatment.

Common Parent Questions (and Straightforward Answers)

“Will it hurt my child?”

No.
Paediatric care uses gentle, corrective motions.
Children often find it relaxing — infants sometimes fall asleep.

“Is chiropractic safe for babies?”

Yes, when modified appropriately.
Infants are treated with fingertip-level forces, not thrusts.

“Is there proof chiropractic helps kids?”

For musculoskeletal conditions — yes.
For non-musculoskeletal conditions — the research is limited and mixed, and we are transparent about that.

“Do you crack babies’ backs/necks?”

No.
That is not appropriate, supported, or part of ethical paediatric practice.

“Do you work with our doctor or other professionals?”

Yes.

We regularly co-manage cases with pediatricians, midwives, physiotherapists, lactation consultants, dentists, and ENTs.

Who Might Benefit from Paediatric Chiropractic?

Who Might Benefit from Paediatric Chiropractic?

Evidence-informed reasons a child may be seen:

  • Stiff neck or limited head turning
  • Mild torticollis related to birth strain
  • Posture issues
  • Sports injuries or overuse
  • Back or neck discomfort from school, devices, or backpacks
  • Difficult crawling or rolling mechanics
  • Infant tension affecting feeding (with co-management)

These are mechanical or movement-based concerns — not disease treatment.

Curious whether chiropractic could help your child?

We take a gentle, evidence-based, collaborative approach — always focused on safety first.

If you’d like your child assessed, or just want to talk through your concerns, we’re here to help.
