Why I Prefer Hands-On Adjustments Over the Ring Dinger® and Y-Strap Technique

The Ring Dinger® and Y-Strap: Instant Relief, But at What Cost?

The Ring Dinger® adjustment has gained a lot of attention online for its dramatic neck pull and audible cracks. And I want to start by saying this: I believe many people have genuinely experienced relief from this technique. If you’re one of them, I celebrate your healing.

But at Fairway Chiropractic Centre in Kitchener, our approach to Chiropractic care is rooted in precision, safety, and long-term correction. That’s why I want to share my personal clinical perspective on why I prefer to adjust the spine with my hands—not a towel.

The Problem With Removing the Hands From the Spine

The Problem With Removing the Hands From the Spine

One of the biggest concerns I have with the Ring Dinger® is that it removes the chiropractor’s hands from direct contact with the spine during the moment of the adjustment.

When my hands are on your spine, I can feel subtle muscle tension, hesitation, or resistance. These cues let me know when your body is ready to receive the adjustment and when it isn’t.

But when a towel is wrapped around your head and the force is delivered from a distance, I lose that tactile feedback. If you’re resisting the thrust without me realizing it, the force may not be received properly—and that could lead to unnecessary discomfort or even injury. Hands-on care allows for moment-to-moment responsiveness and communication.

Traction Alone Doesn’t Mean Alignment

The Ring Dinger® is essentially a high-velocity, Y-axis traction maneuver. It can decompress the spine and create space between the vertebrae, which often brings temporary relief.

But here’s what it’s missing: specific spinal alignment.

Traction pulls everything apart, but it doesn’t address the individual misalignments between vertebrae that are interfering with your nervous system. These subluxations—tiny shifts in spinal structure—require precise correction. That precision is best delivered by an experienced chiropractor’s hands.

The goal of Chiropractic is not just to “pop” or “crack” the spine. It’s to restore proper alignment and function, so that the nervous system can thrive and the body can heal itself.

Long-Term Healing vs. Quick Fixes

We’ve had patients come to our Kitchener clinic who tried the Ring Dinger® elsewhere. Many described a sense of immediate relief, but no sustained improvement. That’s because the root cause—the misalignment of specific spinal segments—hadn’t been corrected.

At Fairway Chiropractic Centre, our approach combines:

  • Thorough structural assessments
  • Specific hands-on adjustments
  • Postural and functional retraining

We don’t chase cracks. We pursue correction. Because true correction allows your body to adapt, stabilize, and function optimally for years to come.

Final Thoughts

Chiropractic care is both an art and a science. And while viral videos may highlight dramatic moments, real healing often happens through quieter, more intentional contact.

My hands were trained to feel misalignment, apply specific corrections, and help your body heal naturally. That’s the care we’re proud to offer at Fairway Chiropractic Centre.
